For years, young, creative men and women have dreamed about making a living from their comic strips. But until recently their only avenue of success was through a syndicate or publisher. Now, more and more cartoonists are doing it on their own and self-publishing their comic strips on the web. With the right amount of work, knowledge and luck, you can be one of them.

Dave Kellett (Sheldon), Brad Guigar (Evil Inc.), Kris Straub (Starslip Crisis), and Scott Kurtz (PvP) take you on a guided tour of everything you need to know to make, post and profit from your own online comics with this 200-page book from Image Comics.

You guys might wanna talk to Barnes and Noble about the advertisement of the book on their site. I’ll give you a little quote of what it says:

    How to Make Web Comics
by Scott Kurtz, Peter Straub, Peter Straub, Kristofer Straub, Kristopher Straub
    Paperback

Who is Peter Straub and why is he listed twice? And why is Kris’ name spelled two different ways?

The image of the book cover also only has Scott and Kris on it…

I think every one should buy their copy of the book from the creators, it’s not like they haven’t entertained us for months with Webcomics Weekly.

I would love to add this title to my library’s collection so I am glad that it’s available from Amazon (even though it sounds as if their info is not entirely up to date!)

The kids at my library would really like this, I think.

    thanks again guys….
    and God bless.

The only reason I didn’t get an artists edition from you guys is because of my deep seated Phobia of Paypal, hence my using Amazon. Sorry guys, I just don’t trust Paypal after the horror stories Ive been hearing recently.

    Is the book actually shipping?

I paid for mine in late Jan, and the site here says by now for late March delivery.

Well, as it is now late April, I’m wondering if I shouldn’t have ordered it from Amazon, as they would at least respond to emails, which I have yet to get a response from here.

I ordered mine directly too on April 12th, but have not yet received it. I sent an email today inquiring and have not gotten a response either. I have hope though after reading that someone has it in their possession above. I hope it comes soon I am really looking forward to it.

Mine just arrived. I was on my way out on my bike when I saw it in the mailbox, and of course I couldn’t let it sit there until I got home!

I don’t remember when I ordered it but I’m pretty sure it was the minute Scott announced it was available for pre-order. To those in the comments above- he blogged a while ago that he had a flooding in his office and a big batch of books which were ready to be shipped got destroyed- maybe that’s why yours are late.

Anyway, about the book- I’ve only flipped through it so far but it looks very decent. The tone of the writing is very honest, friendly- no talking down to the readers! There are direct comments from the four authors popping up throughout the book in that classic ‘floating head with speech bubble’ way, and those add to the relaxed tone of the book. Relaxed, but not lazy- the writers speak from experience and they don’t encourage slacking. And because there are four of them, you get four different points of view on everything, all of them very useful.

I especially liked the ‘In the Hot Seat’ questions where each artist has the others comment on one of his strips, talk about how they interpreted it and what they thought of the artwork. Sometimes it’s nice to see that a successful cartoonist’s work isn’t accepted as perfect by default- there is always something to comment on or criticise.

Yeah, I love this book already. And the Skull drawing on the first page made my day.

There is only one problem I have, really- supposedly my book is the artist edition, but I have no idea what that means and how it differs from the other one.

Got something to say?
